# Core concepts

> The five terms the rest of the docs use: organization, site, survey, response and member.

The dashboard and these docs use five terms throughout: organization, site, survey, response and member.

## Organization

The organization is the account. It owns the subscription, the members, the sites and the surveys. Everything in the dashboard belongs to one organization, and access checks keep each organization's data separate. To keep two products or brands fully apart, use a second organization.

## Site

A site is a domain with its own install code. The install code's file name is the site's ID, and the widget runs only on that domain and its subdomains. A site shows **Connected** after **Check now** finds its code on the home page.

* A website survey runs on exactly one site, and it can be published only after that site is connected.
* Link, QR and email surveys need no site.
* The number of sites is a plan limit: the Free and Starter plans include 1 site, Pro includes 3 and Business includes 10.

## Survey

A survey holds the questions and everything about how they are delivered: the channel, the design, the targeting and the triggers. A survey runs on one channel at a time, and the channel can change later without losing any settings.

A survey's status is **Draft**, **Live**, **Paused** or **Archived**, and only live surveys are shown to respondents. Pausing a live survey takes it down at once and keeps everything about it.

## Response

A response is one submission to a survey, and an answer is the reply to one question within it. Each plan includes a number of responses a month for the whole organization, counted over every survey together. At the limit, collection stops until the next month, unless the organization bought [extra responses](https://docs.usertick.com/account/billing.md#extra-responses), which it buys once on any plan and which never expire. See [how response limits behave](https://docs.usertick.com/account/billing.md#how-response-limits-behave).

Every response records where it came from, including the page address, the country and the browser.

## Member

Members are the people who sign in to the organization. A member's role sets what they can do. Every organization has six built-in roles, **Owner**, **Admin**, **Editor**, **Developer**, **Billing manager** and **Member**, and custom roles with their own permissions are available on the Pro plan and above.

## How the pieces fit

```text theme={null}
Organization
├── Members (each with a role)
├── Sites (domains, each with an install code)
├── Surveys (each on one channel; a website survey belongs to one site)
│   └── Questions
│       └── Responses (counted toward the organization's monthly limit)
├── Workflows (each running on one survey)
└── Dashboards (custom views of the results)
