# Sites

> Add the domains the widget runs on, install each site's code and check that Usertick finds it.

A site is a domain of your organization with its own install code. The [snippet's](https://docs.usertick.com/installation/website.md) file name is the site's key, and the widget runs only on that domain and its subdomains. Each website survey runs on one site; link, QR and email surveys need no site.

## Add and connect a site

Adding, checking and removing sites needs the **Manage sites** permission. Members with only **View sites** see each site and whether it is connected, without the controls.

**1. Add the site**

Under **Settings → Sites**, select **Add site**, enter the **Website address** in the **New site** tab and select **Add site** again.

**2. Install the code**

In the site's tab, copy the tag under **Install code** into the `<head>` of every page of your site.

**3. Check the install**

After the code is live on your site, select **Check now** at the top of the site's tab.

Usertick registers the domain, whatever page address was typed, and the site covers every page and subdomain of that domain. Each site is a tab named after its domain, with a dot that shows whether it is connected. The tab of a site that is still waiting for its code opens first. Besides the tag, the tab offers **Ask an AI assistant**, **Send to a developer** and **Other ways to install**. See [Install on your website](https://docs.usertick.com/installation/website.md).

When you select **Check now**, Usertick loads the home page and looks for the site's code, and the answer stays at the top of the tab. The site's status changes from **Waiting for the code** to **Connected** once the check succeeds, and the tab shows the date it connected. After that, the code is folded under **Show code**. A website survey can be published only on a connected site.

## Site settings

Each site's settings are rows in its tab.

* **Domain** shows the site's domain. **Change domain** moves the site to another domain and keeps its install code, surveys and responses. The site then waits for the code again, and Usertick checks for it on the new domain.
* **Send user identity with responses** is on for every new site. When it is off, no response from that site carries who answered, whatever your page passes to `identify()`. The change waits for **Save changes** in the bar at the bottom of the page. See [Identify your users](https://docs.usertick.com/installation/identify.md#turn-it-off).
* **Remove site** deletes a site after you type its domain. The dialog lists the surveys that run on the site, and **Move the surveys to** moves them to another site. Surveys that don't move are kept, but they stop showing until they move to another site. Responses recorded on the site stay, and the inbox shows their site as "Removed site" with its domain. The site's install code stops working for good, and adding the domain again gives it a new code.

Google Analytics, FullStory and UXCam are switched on for each site under **Settings → Integrations**. See [Google Analytics, FullStory and UXCam](https://docs.usertick.com/integrations/page-events.md).

## Staging and local development

The widget runs on the site's domain and its subdomains, so a staging subdomain such as `staging.usertick.com` works with the main site's code. A staging environment on another domain needs a site of its own, which needs a plan with more than one site. `localhost` can't be added as a site; to try a survey without a live site, use the preview in the survey editor.

## Limits

The number of sites is a plan limit: 1 on Free and Starter, 3 on Pro and 10 on Business. When the limit is reached, a note with an **Upgrade** button takes the place of **Add site**. One plan covers all of an organization's sites, and there is no charge per site.

## Paused sites

When the organization moves to a plan with fewer sites than it has, the extra sites pause. Before the change, the owner chooses which sites stay live in **Settings → Billing**; without a choice, the site with the most responses in the last 30 days stays live. See [Plans and billing](https://docs.usertick.com/account/billing.md#items-over-the-limits-of-a-lower-plan).

* On a paused site, the install code stays on your pages and shows no surveys, and Usertick accepts no responses from it. Its surveys, results and settings stay.
* **Settings → Sites** shows "Paused because of the plan limit." on the site, with **Make live**, which needs the **Manage sites** permission. When the plan has no free place, Usertick first asks which live site to pause in its place ("Make {domain} live?").
* After an upgrade, paused sites go live again by themselves, up to the new limit.
* Link, QR and email surveys aren't tied to a site, so a paused site doesn't affect them.
