# Delete an organization

> How the owner deletes an organization, what stops right away, how to keep the organization during the 14 days, and what is deleted afterward.

Only the owner can delete an organization. The deletion is scheduled 14 days ahead, and the owner can keep the organization until that date.

## Before you start

* Export the responses that you want to keep. See [Exports](https://docs.usertick.com/results/exports.md) and [Export your data](https://docs.usertick.com/account/data-export.md). Scheduling the deletion switches off the API keys at once, so export through the REST API first.
* To hand the organization to another member, see [Transfer ownership](https://docs.usertick.com/workspace/members-and-roles.md#transfer-ownership).
* To stop collecting responses and keep everything, use **Pause collection** under **Settings → Organization**. It pauses every live survey and active workflow. See [Pause collection](https://docs.usertick.com/workspace/organization.md#pause-collection).

## Schedule the deletion

**1. Open Delete organization**

Under **Settings → Organization**, select **Delete organization**.

**2. Type the organization's name**

Type the name of the organization and select **Email me a code**, and Usertick sends a 6-digit code to your account's email address. When the organization has unused [extra responses](https://docs.usertick.com/account/billing.md#extra-responses), the dialog says how many are deleted with it, such as "1,200 unused extra responses are deleted with the organization."

**3. Confirm**

Within 15 minutes, enter the code. If two-factor authentication is on, also enter an **Authenticator code** from your authenticator app, or a recovery code. Then select **Schedule deletion**.

## What stops right away

When the deletion is scheduled:

* Collection stops. The widget, the survey links, the API keys and the connected apps are switched off.
* Pending invitations are revoked, and nobody can join the organization.
* The subscription is set to end with the current billing period, so it doesn't renew. A move to a lower plan or to monthly billing that was waiting for the end of the period is withdrawn first, and a cancel to Free that you chose before stays. While the deletion is scheduled, the plan can't be changed, a new subscription can't start and extra responses can't be bought ([Plans and billing](https://docs.usertick.com/account/billing.md#change-your-plan)).
* Usertick emails every member the date of the deletion and who scheduled it.
* Every page of the dashboard shows the date of the deletion, with a link to **Organization settings**.

Until that date, members can still open the organization and export its results. A member can also leave the organization.

## Keep the organization

Until the date, the owner can select **Keep organization** under **Settings → Organization**. Usertick switches collection, the API keys and the connected apps back on, lets the subscription renew again (unless you had canceled it to Free before scheduling the deletion) and emails every member. Invitations that were revoked are not sent again. If collection was paused before the deletion was scheduled, it stays paused.

When Usertick ends the agreement under the Terms, Usertick schedules the deletion in the same way: everything above stops at once, every member is emailed that Usertick scheduled it, and the organization is deleted after 14 days. **Settings → Organization** then shows no **Keep organization**, because only Usertick can cancel such a deletion. To ask about it, contact support.

## What is deleted after 14 days

* Every survey, response and setting of the organization, including its dashboards, contacts, sites, files, API keys and integrations.
* Its unused extra responses. They aren't refunded.
* The members' access to the organization. Their accounts and their other organizations stay as they are.

Usertick cancels the subscription before it deletes anything, and emails the owner when the deletion is complete. The deletion runs once a day, so it can complete up to a day after the date shown.

Usertick keeps the organization's activity log for 12 months and its support tickets until 24 months after their last activity, and then deletes them. Stripe and Link keep the receipts and invoices for paid orders. Backups are overwritten on a rolling schedule, and Usertick does not restore deleted data from them. The [privacy notice](https://usertick.com/privacy) has the details.
